Privacy Policy
This policy explains what personal information Mabel.Pet collects, why, and what choices you have. Mabel.Pet is run from Australia, and we handle personal information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). The app is available internationally. Where the privacy law of another country applies to us, we'll meet our obligations under it. By using the app you agree to this policy.
1. What we collect
Account information: your email address and a securely stored (hashed) password. If you add payment details for a paid plan, these are handled by our payment provider โ we don't store your full card number. If you subscribe through the App Store, Apple takes the payment and we never see your card details. We use a subscription-management service (RevenueCat) to confirm App Store purchases; it receives an account identifier, an identifier for the app on your device, and your purchase history โ not your name or email address.
Pet and health records: everything you choose to add โ pet profiles, weights, vaccinations, medications, diagnoses, appointments, notes, costs, and any photos or documents you upload.
Sharing information: the email addresses you use to invite co-owners, sitters or vets, and records of transfers you make.
Basic technical information needed to run the app: your device's push-notification subscription if you turn on reminders; the kind of device you use, recorded only as "iPhone", "Android", "desktop" or "other" and never the full device details; your device's timezone, which we use to send reminders at the right hour where you are and to understand which countries people are joining Mabel.Pet from; and, if you came to us through one of our own links โ in an email we sent, an advertisement, or something we posted โ a short tag from that link telling us which one it was. We keep that first tag only, we never replace it later, and it says nothing about you. We don't look up your location from your IP address, we don't ask for GPS location, and we don't track you across other websites or show ads.
2. Why we use it
To provide the app: to store your records, sync them across your devices, show them to people you've shared a pet with, and send the reminders you ask for. To keep the app secure and working. To contact you about your account (for example, password resets or important service notices). To take payment if you're on a paid plan. We do not sell your personal information, and we don't show ads in the app.
3. How visibility works
Records in Mabel carry one of three levels. Shared records are visible to your care circle and to any vet or clinic you share with, and these are the records that travel if a rescue adopts an animal out to you. Care-private records are visible to you and your care circle only, and are never shown to a vet. Organisation-internal records belong to a rescue organisation and are never shown to foster carers, vets or adopters.
These levels are enforced in the database itself, not only hidden in the app. A pet sitter you share with sees less than a co-owner, and a vet never sees anything you have marked private.
You can also create a link that shows a pet's shared records to anyone who opens it, without an account โ for a vet, a kennel or a sitter. It shows shared records only: never care-private or organisation-internal ones, and never your email address. When you make the link you choose whether it also opens the files attached to those records, such as x-rays, lab results and photos; that choice is fixed for the life of that link, and links are made without files unless you say otherwise. It stops working after two weeks, and you can turn it off at any time โ turning it off stops the files too.
4. When we share information
With people you choose: when you share or transfer a pet, the relevant records become visible to that person's account; and if you create a public record link, that pet's shared records become visible to anyone you give the link to. With service providers who help us run the app (such as our hosting, database, email, payment and subscription-management providers) โ only as needed, and bound to protect it. If required by law. We don't otherwise disclose your information.
Assisted transfers: if an account holder dies or can no longer manage their account, we may โ at our discretion and after reasonable checks โ provide a pet's records to a co-owner, family member or new carer, so an animal's health history isn't lost. We only do this where we're satisfied it's appropriate, and we may ask for proof first.
5. Where it's stored
Mabel.Pet is operated from Australia and your records are stored on servers in Australia. Some of the providers we rely on to run the app โ for example email delivery, payment processing and App Store purchase confirmation โ may store or process information on servers in other countries. Wherever information goes, we take reasonable steps to see that it's handled consistently with this policy and with the Australian Privacy Principles.
If you use Mabel.Pet from outside Australia, this means your information is transferred to and stored in Australia.
6. Security
We use measures such as encrypted connections, hashed passwords and per-account access rules so that only you (and people you've shared with) can see your records. No system is perfectly secure, but we take protecting your information seriously and act promptly if a problem arises.
7. Your choices and rights
You can view, edit and export your records at any time in the app. You can delete individual records, or delete your whole account and its data from Settings. You can turn reminders on or off, and hide features you don't want. You can ask us what personal information we hold about you and request a correction.
Depending on where you live you may also have the right to receive a copy of your information in a portable form (the export in the app does this), to ask us to delete it, to object to or restrict certain uses of it, and to withdraw consent you've given. You can also complain to your local privacy regulator โ in Australia that's the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (oaic.gov.au). To make any request or raise a privacy concern, email hello@mabel.pet. We'll respond as soon as we reasonably can.
8. Keeping and deleting data
We keep your information while your account is active. If you delete your account, we delete your personal data and uploaded files, except where we're required to keep limited records (for example, basic transaction records for tax purposes). Records you transferred to someone else remain in their account, as that's a separate copy they now hold. Similarly, if a pet you own is shared with a co-owner, deleting your account passes that pet's records and files to the co-owner rather than deleting them; remove the co-owner's access before deleting if you want those records gone too.
If an account has had no paid plan and no activity for three years, we may delete it and its data. We'll email you at least six months beforehand, so you can sign in to keep the account or download a copy of your records. Accounts with a shared pet aren't deleted this way.
9. Children
Mabel.Pet isn't intended for children. You should be at least 16, or have a parent or guardian's consent, to use it.
10. Changes
We may update this policy. If we make a material change we'll take reasonable steps to let you know. The "last updated" date above shows the current version.
11. Contact
For any privacy question or request, email hello@mabel.pet.
